Map: The Gulf and Hormuz, marking Strait of Hormuz
The market's attempt to look past the Strait of Hormuz standoff is being tested by signs the crisis is deepening rather than resolving. Iran's navy reports a tanker caught fire in the strait, a person involved in the talks denies reports that a deal is close, and Tehran's security chief says no negotiations will happen until the US builds trust. Yet Secretary of State Rubio says oil flows through Hormuz are nearly back to pre-war levels, and Treasury Secretary Bessent argues Iran's currency has collapsed and panic is setting in domestically, a split between hardening rhetoric and improving physical flows that is keeping equities rangebound even as the diplomatic track stalls.
Earnings are doing the real work in individual names. Equifax is up 10.5% despite cutting revenue guidance on a weaker mortgage market, as investors focus on the EPS beat. Hasbro gains 9.4% after raising its full-year outlook on Magic: The Gathering strength. General Motors drops 8.3% even after approving a $20 billion buyback, as a narrowed guide and a slight EPS miss outweigh the capital return news, with CEO comments on expanding hybrid offerings doing little to offset it. Karman Holdings adds 6.3% and the VIX falls 6.4%, suggesting broader hedging demand is easing even as single names swing hard. DaVita is down 5.5% and Howmet Aerospace off 5.6%, while Comfort Systems falls 4.7%.
Strategy Inc is up 6.2% and the iShares MSCI Indonesia ETF jumps 7.7%, both outliers relative to the broader tape.
Macro data is mixed. Housing starts came in at 1.221 million versus 1.305 million expected, pending home sales fell 7.3% to a record low, and ADP shows private payrolls rising 18,500 a week in the four weeks to October 3. Abroad, Adidas raised its full-year operating profit outlook to €2.6 billion on record quarterly revenue, while Carrefour cut its 2026 targets citing French unrest, and a new poll shows Marine Le Pen reaching a runoff against Jean-Luc Melenchon and winning it comfortably, underscoring the political uncertainty Bessent downplayed earlier in dismissing spillover risk from France's protests.
The net effect: oil-security and diplomatic risk remain unresolved, but earnings dispersion and a falling VIX are giving the tape room to trade on fundamentals for now.
