Prudential Financial has agreed to sell its equity interests in Prudential of Brazil and Prudential of Mexico to CNP Assurances Group in a deal worth approximately $4.025 billion in cash, subject to closing adjustments.
Under the terms, Prudential of Brazil goes to CNP Seguradora and Prudential of Mexico goes to CNP Assurances Holding. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2027, pending regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
Chairman and chief executive Andy Sullivan said the sale advances plans to "narrow our geographic footprint and build a simpler, more focused Prudential."
That framing echoes language Sullivan has used around separate turmoil in Japan, where regulators imposed a sales restriction tied to a 5.2 billion yen fraud scandal that runs through January 2027. The two situations are otherwise unconnected: the Latin American sale is a planned portfolio simplification, while the Japan restriction is a regulator-imposed suspension. Raising $4.025 billion in cash and sharpening the company's geographic focus does nothing to resolve the structural concerns raised in Japan or shorten that suspension. With the Latin American deal not closing until the second half of 2027, investors are left tracking two separate timelines: a multi-year regulatory remediation process in Japan and a multi-year regulatory approval process for the Brazil and Mexico sale.
