Steel Dynamics reported third quarter earnings per share of $5.26 on a GAAP basis, missing expectations by $0.26. Revenue was $6.51bn, short of the $6.56bn analysts had forecast.
Chairman and Chief Executive Mark D. Millett said steel prices improved and the company executed well across its steel platform, driving a sequential quarterly increase in consolidated operating income of $306m, or 44%.
The company said its second Continuous Annealing and Solution Heat line at the aluminum mill is expected to be commissioned in the coming months and become operational in early first quarter 2027. Management said it expects aluminum volumes and profitability to improve in the fourth quarter of 2026 and through 2027 as startup costs ease and utilization and yields rise.
The miss, set against a 44% jump in operating income, shows that much of the company's near term earnings volatility is now coming from the aluminum mill ramp rather than the core steel business, where pricing improved and execution held up. Pushing the second heat treat line's commissioning into early 2027, and tying meaningful aluminum profit gains to the fourth quarter of 2026, extends the period investors must tolerate startup costs weighing on consolidated results. That keeps the aluminum segment a drag on reported earnings for at least another year even as the steel side recovers, making the diversification bet a longer dated payoff than previously framed.
