Boeing plans to begin moving 787 production to 10 aircraft a month this year. Its shares are down 4.0 per cent at $180.81 in morning trade.
In its third-quarter results, Boeing reported a core loss of $0.34 a share, $0.13 worse than expected. Revenue was $24.19 billion, against $24.56 billion expected. Its total backlog reached a record $745 billion.
Boeing's 737 output is still working toward 47 a month. The Max 10 certification issue was cleared in October.
A 787 rate of 10 a month would mark progress on the widebody side. It would come just as the third-quarter report flagged lingering execution and cost pressure on the narrowbody program. The Max 10 clearance removes one reason for hesitation over production. That puts more weight on Boeing's own factory execution, which investors are watching as the company works toward the next stage of cash-flow recovery. Whether the 787 ramp holds depends on supply-chain and quality checks, the kind that have slowed earlier rate increases. The third-quarter miss already underlined that risk.
