Centene reported third-quarter earnings of $0.58 per share, $0.48 better than expected. Revenue was $50.65 billion.
The company raised the lowest figure it now expects for 2026. Its floor for GAAP diluted earnings per share, the measure set under standard accounting rules, is more than $3.46. Its floor for adjusted diluted earnings per share is more than $5.20. Both rose by $0.40 from its prior guidance.
Centene narrowed its full-year range for the health benefits ratio, the share of premium revenue paid out as medical costs, to 90.4 per cent to 91.1 per cent. It lowered its interest expense guidance to $600 million to $620 million. It has cut total debt by $1.1 billion since June 30, including the full redemption of its 2027 senior notes in October.
Chief Executive Officer Sarah M. London said "solid underlying fundamentals drove a faster recovery in earnings than previously anticipated." She said the company remains focused on a strong finish to 2026.
On October 9, Humana cleared the top-quartile threshold for Medicare Advantage Star Ratings, the government quality grades for those plans, and used that result to reaffirm its own guidance floor. Centene's gains look different. The improvement comes from its medical cost ratio and its balance sheet, not from Star Ratings. Raising its earnings floor by $0.40 while also lowering its interest expense outlook suggests the gain comes from cost control and lower debt rather than the Star Ratings factor that is driving commentary elsewhere in managed care.
