The gain is a small step, not a turn. The October composite PMI slipped to 52.8. Germany's Economy Ministry warned on October 14 that momentum slowed in the third quarter and that industrial activity stayed subdued. Industrial production rose 2 per cent in the same stretch in which factory orders fell sharply, so this month's German data have been mixed and single readings are hard to build on.
In France, private-sector activity contracted to 48.4 in the October PMI.
For markets, a reading this size points to slight stabilization, not a clear change in direction.
