The session's defining trade, risk appetite shrugging off Middle East escalation while chips and data-center names rallied, lost some of its footing after hours as oil and yields pushed higher together. WTI gained 2.3% to $103.78 a barrel and the 10-year yield rose seven basis points to 5.14%, with gold slipping to around $4,130 an ounce. 3M led after-hours action, up 5.4%, after announcing an expanded commercial relationship with an Amazon subsidiary. The company issued a warrant for 3,162,015 shares at $164.89, vesting as Amazon makes payments for optical connectivity and data-center products, with 85% vesting once cumulative payments hit $6 billion. Trex Company gained 2.0%. On the other side, Steel Dynamics fell 4.4% and W. R. Berkley dropped 2.0% even after posting Q3 EPS of $1.17, a penny ahead of expectations, with insurance names broadly weak in the after-hours tape.
Deal activity stayed brisk. Tradeweb Markets agreed to acquire Trumid Holdings for roughly $1.97 billion, about $1.89 billion in cash and $82 million in equity, targeted to close in the first half of 2027. Medtronic completed the separation of its MiniMed Group, an offer that was 5.4 times subscribed, and named Michael Marinaro president effective October 14. AES picked up European Commission and New York Public Service Commission clearances for its Horizon Parent merger. Western Alliance reported Q3 EPS of $2.45, two cents light, on revenue of $1.01 billion versus $1.00 billion expected.
Politically, Vice President Vance said Ukraine should not join NATO and that US and Ukrainian interests sometimes diverge, while declining to say whether Trump would endorse a 2028 run. Trump used Truth Social to tout investment commitments exceeding $21 trillion since taking office and announced an $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief Program for farmers, saying fuel prices will fall once the Iran war ends. In Israel, Netanyahu faces an October 27 election amid anger over the October 7 security failure, though coalition dynamics could let him remain in office regardless of the outcome.
