TechCrunch, citing Bloomberg and CNBC, said it was aimed at about 7% of US employees, roughly 8,750 people. Business Insider, as relayed by Yahoo Finance, said eligible staff were US employees at level 67 or below whose age and years of service totalled 70 or more, and that sales and services incentive plan workers were excluded. Payouts ran from 8 to 39 weeks of base pay in one cash payment, depending on level and tenure.
On October 13, Microsoft's Cloud President asked leaders to find 20% cost cuts. As of October 8, the company's labor certification and visa access were suspended, a restriction tied to its hiring practices. Investors reading expense trends would weigh the number of people affected alongside Microsoft's continued AI infrastructure spending, including commitments such as Maia 300.
