The debt is meant to pay for GPUs, the chips used to train and run AI systems, at a time when Musk says tight credit will thin out smaller cloud operators.

Elon Musk says SpaceX has closed $40 billion of debt to buy GPUs, the chips used to train and run AI systems.
Neoclouds are newer cloud companies that rent out GPU computing power to other businesses.
The closing turns a financing plan into executed debt and removes doubt about whether SpaceX could raise capital at this scale. It also marks SpaceX's standing in a credit market that is tightening. The deal keeps SpaceX's GPU buildout funded without using Tesla's balance sheet, even as speculation about a merger between SpaceX and Tesla keeps growing.
