Rocket Companies misses on revenue and guides fourth quarter to $2.2bn as mortgage rates bite
Third-quarter revenue of $2.57bn fell about $100mn short of forecasts, and management points to a smaller quarter ahead despite its best margin in nearly five years.
Rocket Companies missed on third-quarter revenue and then guided to a markedly smaller fourth quarter, leaving its claims of share gains and fat margins to be tested against a shrinking top line. Revenue came in at $2.57bn against $2.67bn expected, while earnings of $0.15 a share matched forecasts.
The guidance is the harder part. Rocket expects adjusted revenue of $2.2bn in the fourth quarter of 2026, well below the $2.57bn it has just posted. The miss itself is modest: the result sat inside the $2.5bn to $2.7bn range management gave in August, according to Yahoo Finance, and it was far above the $1.87bn of a year earlier. But the next quarter points the wrong way.
Varun Krishna, the chief executive, said Rocket gained market share in both purchase and refinance and posted its highest profitability margin in nearly five years, even as mortgage rates climbed to a three-year high. Yahoo Finance had put 30-year rates near 7.40% before the report. The company's own numbers support the profitability claim: adjusted net income reached $419mn against $158mn a year ago, and gain on sale margin was 3.33%.
Still, that margin is a product of the rate environment as much as of execution, and the guide suggests volume is paying for it. Rate-and-term refinancing is about 30% of Rocket's revenue, according to Yahoo Finance, which is the business most exposed to rates staying high. Share gains are worth less in a market that is contracting.
The shares were down 39.41% for the year going into the report, per Yahoo Finance, so expectations were already low. They will not be rescued by a margin record. The fourth-quarter revenue figure will show whether share and margin can offset a smaller top line, and a $2.2bn guide says that is a lot to ask while rates stay where they are.
