Maariv says Israel sees signs of US preparations for a possible attack on Iran
The Israeli paper puts two US carriers and 12 destroyers and warships in the Arabian Sea, while the same report points to moves to revive talks with Tehran.
Israel has seen early signs of broad US military preparations for a possible strike on Iran, the Israeli newspaper Maariv reports, as relayed by Turkey's state news agency Anadolu. The paper says Washington has sent two aircraft carriers and 12 destroyers and warships to the Arabian Sea, that about 190 US aircraft are refuelling across the US Central Command and European areas, and that eight military transport aircraft have landed in southern Israel.
The US is also strengthening air defences in Israel, Patriot systems among them, which fits the physical reinforcement already visible this morning in a convoy from Fort Bliss. The specific numbers go further than anything previously established, though. They reach the reader through a Turkish state outlet quoting an Israeli newspaper, not through US or Israeli officials, and they should be weighed that way.
The diplomatic picture points the other way, and the same report admits as much. Maariv says there are moves to explore resuming talks between Washington and Tehran. That arrives in the week Tom Barrack called Washington "very close" to a deal and Qatari mediators returned to Tehran. Warships and aircraft on one side, a near-deal on the other: the distance between them has widened, not closed.
The report does not say which track is the real one, and a buildup of this kind serves both. It can be contingency planning, or it can be leverage at the table. For oil, shipping and the Gulf's risk pricing, the difference is large. Until talks produce something or the hardware moves from staging to action, the military detail deserves more attention than the diplomatic language, because ships and aircraft are costly to deploy and words are not.
