Donald Trump was briefed on military options against Iran on Thursday, Fox reported
The presidential briefing follows a top admiral's review of attack options a day earlier, while Qatari mediators wait in Tehran for a reply to the latest US proposal.
Donald Trump was briefed on military options against Iran on Thursday, Fox reported, the most direct planning step so far in a sequence that has run for weeks. The Wall Street Journal reported that a top admiral had briefed him on attack options a day earlier, so the distance between the president's restraint and an order to strike is shrinking, not resetting.
The groundwork is already laid. The Pentagon has drafted a three-day strike plan, and Trump had already said no to five others. Kan reported that he told CENTCOM to prepare a plan with no deadline, and the Atlantic reported that the White House asked for options with size and targets undetermined. Trump has reportedly ordered plans to hit Iranian energy sites with the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal if combat resumes.
Against that sits his public line. Trump has pledged not to strike before the November 3 election, and on October 8 extended the pledge through the midterm date, reversing his position of a day earlier. He now says the war will end soon, but demands a guarantee that Iran will not build a nuclear weapon, and offers Tehran no mechanism for giving one.
Diplomacy has not closed. Axios reported that Qatari mediators are in Tehran to discuss the latest US proposal, with a reply due by the end of the week. US envoy Tom Barrack says a deal is "very close". Yet Iran rejected Washington's seven-day Hormuz plan on October 28, calling its terms "unacceptable demands".
Crude has held a lower risk premium through weeks of similar escalation markers paired with no-strike pledges. That is a bet that the rhetoric keeps decoupling from action. A presidential briefing on options is a firmer signal than anything said so far this cycle, and if Tehran's reply disappoints, the oil price looks the more exposed.
