Al Arabiya reports, citing sources, that mediators and Iran are discussing a meeting in Turkey before November 4. The same sources say the timeline for a new proposal includes opening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the siege.
Qatari mediators have put a new draft deal to Iran in Tehran. Arab mediators are pressing Iran for a deal on IAEA inspections and US sanctions relief. An official briefed on the talks says Tehran is weighing the draft and will reply by the end of the week.
Iran rejected Washington's latest seven-day Hormuz proposal outright on October 28. Tehran called its terms unacceptable demands rather than a basis for talks. Iranian state TV says the US blockade must be lifted first. Iran's Foreign Minister says the blockade has cut Iran's imports by 25 per cent.
Iran's navy says a tanker hit sea mines east of the Strait of Hormuz, and that talks to reopen the strait have stalled. CENTCOM says US forces and regional partners control the international waterway, and that Iran does not.
Since late September the standoff has moved through proposals, rejections and incidents, including mine strikes, tanker fires and a sinking. Washington and Tehran have recently given contradictory accounts of how much shipping is moving through the strait.
