Pre-market trade is risk-off, with SPY down 0.3%. Energy is the standout sector at +1.2%, tracking a sharp jump in crude as USO and BNO both rise 3.2% following Gulf of Mexico production shut-ins and a reported tanker strike near Qatar; XOP is up 1.7% with SM Energy, California Resources and Occidental Petroleum leading the group. Technology and Financials are the weakest major sectors, both down 0.6%, with Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and American Express among the softest in financials, while VeriSign is the clear laggard in tech at -4.3%. Industrials and Materials are also soft, down 0.5% and led lower by Vertiv and Sherwin-Williams, respectively.
Factors show broad caution: High Beta is off 0.9% and Momentum down 0.7%, while Mega Cap Growth holds up at +0.2%.
Within mega-caps, ExxonMobil and Chevron outperform on the oil move, while semiconductor names Applied Materials, Lam Research and KLA Corp are among the softest. Semiconductor ETFs are broadly weak, with SMH down 1.1% and SOXX down 1.3%.
Single-stock losers are concentrated in chips and optical names, while gainers skew toward defense and asset managers without a clear shared catalyst.
