Broadcom is arranging over $50 billion in financing for OpenAI's custom artificial intelligence chip, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The arrangement follows a similar facility Broadcom built for Anthropic. Wall Street banks turned an earlier offer of up to $42 billion into a committed financing facility for Anthropic's custom chip orders, as Anthropic prepares for investor meetings and a possible stock listing.
The OpenAI financing comes as the company faces a California subpoena over cybersecurity incidents. It also follows the resignation of David Robinson, who led safety and transparency work at OpenAI, on Sunday. Robinson warned that AI companies should operate with the layered safety checks used at nuclear power plants.
The deal gives Broadcom a second major customer locked into custom-chip financing alongside Anthropic, building an order book that rivals Nvidia's own disclosed AI chip exposure. That scale deepens Broadcom's reliance on the same AI labs it supplies, and puts its OpenAI and Anthropic commitments on comparable footing, leaving the backlog largely independent of how OpenAI's governance and IPO questions are eventually resolved.
