The UK Maritime Trade Operations centre says it received a report of a tanker struck by multiple projectiles 51 nautical miles north of Madinat Ash Shamal, Qatar, with casualties reported. The centre has not named those responsible.
The strike follows a string of unconfirmed incidents in the same waters. On Monday, UKMTO reported an incident 11 nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman, inside the Strait of Hormuz. On Sunday, a tanker reported multiple explosions 60 nautical miles south of Al Mukha, Yemen, in waters held by the Houthis since early September. None of those reports included casualties.
This is the first of the recent incidents to include confirmed casualties, marking it out from a pattern in which actual damage has been hard to establish. It also comes as mediated talks between the United States and Iran over blockade and sanctions terms remain without a signed deal.
The incident lands alongside separate strain on regional energy supply. Global LNG spot prices hit their highest level since late 2022 on Sunday after Qatar extended a supply freeze, and Qatar says the first LNG train at its Northfield East project is ready, with gas due in November, though industry reports on the start date conflict. Crude oil has long carried a standing risk premium tied to the Strait of Hormuz. A confirmed attack, rather than another ambiguous debris report, would test whether that premium has understated the physical danger to tankers moving through the corridor.
