XPO beats third-quarter profit forecasts by $0.11 but misses on revenue
The trucking and logistics company earned $1.70 a share on revenue of $2.37 billion, against analyst expectations of $2.39 billion.
XPO earned $1.70 a share in the third quarter, $0.11 more than expected, while revenue of $2.37 billion fell short of the $2.39 billion forecast. The gap between the two results points to cost control as the main source of the beat.
Chairman and chief executive Mario Harik said the quarter reflected yield growth, higher tonnage, cost efficiencies and wider use of AI. He expects further upside as freight demand recovers.
That expectation is a forecast, and the revenue shortfall is the first hard figure to set against it. If revenue starts to close on earnings in coming quarters, the yield and tonnage gains are holding. If it does not, margin improvement is carrying the result alone. A recovery in freight demand is what would turn efficiency gains into a larger revenue base.
XPO's own guidance set a high bar for margins. On its second-quarter call, the company said it expected a third-quarter operating ratio below 81%, against a typical seasonal rise of 200 to 250 basis points. It also raised its full-year margin improvement target to at least 200 basis points, from 100 to 150. The operating ratio is operating costs as a share of revenue, so a lower figure is better.
