It is the latest in a run of incidents in the corridor. Iran's navy has said a tanker hit sea mines east of the strait. US Central Command says US forces have cleared all internationally recognised primary transit routes of mines and that they remain clear. It also says the US and regional partners control the waterway, not Iran.
Oil flows have so far held. Saudi shipping tracker data shows October volumes nearly matching September, and the Gulf crude premium has fallen from $34 a barrel to about $6. Earlier reports of fires and projectiles in this area have not disrupted measured flows.
Iranian state TV says the US blockade of Iran must be lifted before talks to reopen the strait can move. Mediators and Iran are discussing a meeting in Turkey before November 4.
