Chart: Fed target rate, top of the range
Today's session distilled into a single tension: the Fed tightened policy while Trump demanded the opposite, and markets are left pricing two forces pulling in opposite directions. The Fed hiked 25 basis points unanimously to a 3.75%-4% target range, with the dot plot pointing to one more hike this year and Governor Warsh saying inflation has failed to pass the Fed's test. Within hours, Trump posted that rates should be "1%, or less" and called on the Fed to act fast, while separately expressing continued confidence in Warsh and saying he wants him to be independent. That contradiction is now a standing feature of the policy backdrop.
After hours, the rate-versus-growth tension plays out across asset classes. The 2-year Treasury yield finished the session at 4.74%, the dollar index at 100.19, its strongest since July 31, and crude fell further to around $101.36 a barrel. On Iran, Trump said the country is not ready for a deal but that the war will end "very soon," and he plans to hold talks with Gulf leaders next week. The geopolitical bid under oil remains intact even as inventory data and Saudi pipeline restoration news push prices lower.
The single most dramatic after-hours move belongs to Generac, up 33.6%, after the company entered a transaction agreement with Amazon under which it issues Amazon a warrant to acquire up to 1,693,745 shares at $200.9266 per share, tied to a long-term supply agreement for backup power generators for Amazon data centers. Warrant vesting is linked to aggregate gross payments of up to $8 billion, with initial deliveries of $2.4 billion expected in 2027 and 2028. CoreWeave adds 4.0% after hours, Nebius Group rises 6.5%, and Credo Technology Group gains 2.9%, continuing the session's AI infrastructure tilt. Lennar falls 2.5% after reporting Q3 revenue of $8.05 billion against $8.39 billion expected and cutting its full-year delivery target to 80,000 to 81,000 homes from 82,000 to 83,000.
Elsewhere, Salesforce forecasts fiscal 2030 sales of $63 billion, above the $61.4 billion expected. Exxon Mobil is nearing a preliminary agreement to invest in Venezuelan oil fields, with a memorandum of understanding with PDVSA potentially signed this month. The House passed a bill shifting electrical grid upgrade costs to data centers, and separately voted 262 to 159 to impose sanctions and tariffs over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with Trump expected to sign. OpenAI disclosed six model-misalignment safety incidents. Trump says the US is very close to a deal with Mexico, though trade talks were pushed back one week.
The broader implication is that with the Fed still hiking, energy prices elevated, housing weakening, and the executive branch publicly demanding the opposite of current monetary policy, the next several weeks will test whether the economy can absorb tighter financial conditions or forces the Fed to pause before its own projections suggest it should.
