Binance halts all deposits and withdrawals and pledges to cover losses
The exchange says $2.54 bln is frozen and more may follow as it works with law enforcement. It has widened its suspension well beyond Binance Alpha and says it will make users whole.
Binance has suspended all deposits and withdrawals, a far wider step than the halt to Binance Alpha trading it had announced, and says it will cover all losses. It has also told the market that $2.54 bln has been frozen and that it may freeze more as it works with law enforcement.
The pledge is the bolder claim, and it is only as good as the final tally. The frozen figure is close to the $2.77 bln that on-chain data showed leaving Binance wallets across five blockchains. It is also well above the $1.8 bln that Tether and Circle had frozen between them, nearly double the $971 mln in USDT that Tether froze on its own after the outflows. Binance had issued no update when Tether made that first move, so the stablecoin issuers were setting the pace and the exchange was following.
The climb from $1.8 bln to $2.54 bln says this is not a contained incident. Binance's own warning that further freezes are possible says the same: the work is still widening. The exchange says it is investigating reports of a security issue and that its security teams are reviewing the relevant information. Its reference to law enforcement points the same way, though Binance has not yet described what happened in its own words.
The suspension matters most. Until now the response happened behind the scenes, in freezes by token issuers. Stopping every deposit and withdrawal is the first visible cost to all users, and it is the exchange's own decision. A promise to make customers whole steadies nerves, but a platform that cannot move funds in or out is one customers cannot test. What a reader should watch is how far the estimate of losses grows, and how long Binance keeps its doors shut.
