Midday Mashup
Published
The morning's divergence, risk-on equities against a deteriorating Middle East backdrop, has held through midday, and if anything widened. The VIX is down 7.3% even as Iran's navy says US forces struck its Konark base and Houthi forces claim fresh attacks on Saudi infrastructure, with Brent and WTI both ticking higher on the news. Equities are shrugging it off: the Nasdaq 100 is up 1.5%, and data-center and semiconductor names remain the clear leaders, with Datadog up 6.3%, Sandisk up 5.8%, Palantir up 5.1%, Rambus up 5.1% and Amazon up 5.0%.
France is the other story gathering force. Ten-year yields have climbed to their highest since 2002, on pace for the largest one-day jump since March 2025, as Paris authorities impose an 8 pm curfew around Place de la Republique and Les Halles. The bind is structural: higher yields raise borrowing costs for households even as the bond market pressures the government to cut spending, a squeeze that cuts both ways on public anger. Polling now shows Mélenchon, who supports the protests but not the violence, far ahead of Le Pen among 18 to 24 year olds, a dynamic that complicates the narrative that unrest is pushing France rightward, especially given markets would likely distrust his debt plan even more.
Diplomatically, Iran's Aref says Tehran has no choice but to assert control over Hormuz, though transit could be facilitated for friendly nations, while Lavrov is calling for a return to pre-crisis Middle East conditions and a resumption of Yemen talks. Qatar's energy minister is meeting Iran's acting oil minister in Doha, and Qatar separately plans two Lebanese power plants tied to a 20-year LNG deal.
On the tape, defensive and rate-sensitive names are lagging: FMC is down 5.9%, Mosaic down 4.1%, and utilities NRG and Eversource are off 4.1% and 3.8% respectively as yields rise. In deal news, TTM Technologies is buying MKS's Ophir Optics business for roughly $650 million, Schneider Electric launched a 6 billion euro capital raise to fund its PTC purchase, and Expand Energy named Daniel Brown as CEO. Moderna is up sharply on the session, and Strategy raised its buyback authorization to $3.0 billion.
