Map: The Gulf and Hormuz, marking Strait of Hormuz
The Hormuz standoff that rattled futures this morning has hardened into a fixed feature of the tape rather than a fading headline risk. Iran's security chief Rezaei says Tehran has given the US four to five days to lift the naval blockade, release frozen assets and end hostilities before any talks on reopening the strait resume, while the foreign ministry adds that a separate Hormuz route agreed with Oman is a precondition. Rubio confirms Iran fired on commercial ships this morning and says Trump has "a number of options," including military ones, even as he calls Tuesday's indirect talks "positive but not a breakthrough."
That mix of unresolved conflict and rising rates is doing the real damage. The 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.081%, its highest since 2007, the 30-year touched 5.367%, and the 5-year crossed 5% for the first time since 2007, after Fed Vice Chair Barr said further rate hikes are likely needed and Governor Goolsbee warned that large supply shocks can leave a persistent inflation mark. The VIX is up 6.1%, reflecting the broad unease.
Energy policy whiplash added to the volatility. Reports that the White House was preparing a 90-day diesel export ban sent US diesel futures down more than 7% and European diesel futures up more than 7% intraday, hitting Marathon Petroleum, before a White House official called the report "fake news." Energy Secretary Wright separately said a blanket diesel ban is unlikely. Brent-linked BNO is still up 3.5% on the day.
Rate sensitivity and travel exposure are punishing individual names. Paychex fell 7.2% after missing on revenue despite raising fiscal 2027 guidance, SolarEdge is down 6.8%, Expedia off 6.6% and Airbnb down 5.8% as discretionary and travel names lag. Voyager Technologies extends its rout, down 20.1%, compounding Tuesday's slide. On the other side, CrowdStrike gained 4.1%, Casey's General Stores rose 3.8% and Veeva Systems added 3.7%, showing selective risk appetite even as the broader market digests a strait crisis that shows no sign of near-term resolution alongside the highest long-end yields in nearly two decades.
