The statement follows a weekend of talks between Treasury Secretary Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. Bessent called the talks a success and said another meeting on artificial intelligence has been agreed, along with a US-proposed notification system between the two countries. Bessent had earlier met He Lifeng at JPMorgan and called those talks fulsome, meant to set the stage for a summit between Trump and Xi.
US Trade Representative Greer said the two countries are continuing talks toward a board-of-trade agreement, with China's side likely to cover consumer goods and low-tech items.
Nvidia's Huang, Apple's Cook and OpenAI's Altman are set to attend a state dinner with Trump and Xi, a sign of the stakes for technology companies as Washington presses Beijing over chip export limits, tariffs and rare earth supplies.
The statement softens the adversarial tone that has dominated recent US-China relations. It suggests both sides are moving toward managed engagement rather than escalation, which reduces tail risk for equities and supports the apparent momentum toward a Trump-Xi summit.
