Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump and the two agreed to meet in New York. Zelenskiy also thanked Trump for enacting the Graham bill into law.
The call comes as Trump has said the war will end soon. Fighting has not stopped. Poland has launched preemptive operations to guard its airspace as Russian strikes continue near Ukraine's ports, and Russia has struck ships near those ports even as an earlier version of a Turkish plan to end fighting in the Black Sea sits with both Moscow and Kyiv. Turkey has sent both sides a new offer to end the Black Sea fighting and is waiting on a response.
Zelenskiy's confirmation of a meeting with Trump, and his thanks for the Graham bill, mark incremental diplomatic engagement rather than a shift in direction. Trump has spoken of ending the war soon while also pursuing other geopolitical priorities, from Greenland to talks with China, and Ukraine appears to be one item among several competing for his attention rather than the central one.
