S&P 500 gains 0.9% in early regular-session trading, with broad participation across most sectors. Technology leads at +2.0%, driven by a strong sweep across semiconductors and hardware, with Intel (+7.3%), Corning (+6.2%), HP Enterprise (+5.8%), AMD (+5.2%), and Micron Technology (+5.2%) standing out as the sector's top movers. Salesforce is the notable exception, off 3.2%. Consumer Discretionary adds 1.0%, lifted broadly, with automakers General Motors and Ford Motor both up 3.2% as General Motors is set to produce Patriot missile parts amid a reported US arms shortage. Tesla gains 2.6%. Lyft is the sector's clear laggard at -3.5%. Materials rises 0.8%, led by Albemarle (+3.1%) and Freeport-McMoRan (+2.9%), with metals and mining broadly bid. Industrials adds 0.6%, with Generac surging 22.6% as the standout, and Eaton up 4.8%; Axon Enterprise slides 2.4% against the sector's grain. Health Care rises 0.6%, with Moderna jumping 8.6% as the clear outlier to the upside, while Abbott Labs, Boston Scientific, and Henry Schein each fall around 1.3%. Real Estate and Utilities each add 0.6%, both broadly green. Financials is flat to slightly negative at -0.3% as a sector despite gains in Robinhood (+3.2%), Blackstone (+1.8%), and Coinbase (+1.4%), with larger names including Wells Fargo, Berkshire Hathaway, and Citigroup each down around 1.1%; Instacart drops 3.3%. Consumer Staples is nearly flat at +0.1%. Energy is also roughly flat at +0.1% as a sector, with oil prices falling sharply on easing Middle East supply disruption fears, leaving integrated majors ExxonMobil and Chevron in the red while drillers and exploration names show modest gains.
Factor positioning tilts strongly toward risk. High Beta ETF leads all factors at +2.5%, followed by S&P 500 Momentum (+2.0%) and iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (+1.8%). Growth and mid-cap momentum are also well bid. Value factors lag, with S&P 500 Value at +0.5% and dividend-oriented ETFs near flat.
Among mega-cap growth names, AMD (+5.2%) and Oracle (+4.1%) are the standouts. Nvidia gains 2.3% after its chief executive says the company will sell twice as many chips next year as this year. Broadcom and Qualcomm each rise around 2.3-2.4%. On the downside, Salesforce (-3.2%) is the weakest in the cohort by a wide margin, with Booking Holdings (-1.4%) and Adobe (-1.2%) also lagging.
Sector ETFs beyond the main groups reflect the same themes. Semiconductors are the clearest focal point: iShares Semiconductor ETF gains 3.4% and VanEck Semiconductor ETF adds 2.8%. Biotech ETF rises 2.6% alongside Moderna's surge. Airlines ETF adds 2.2%, Metals & Mining ETF gains 2.0%. Software-focused ETFs are notably softer, with the Software ETF up only 0.3% and the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF up 0.2%, consistent with Salesforce's drag.
Thematic ETFs with large moves are led by ARK Innovation ETF (+3.4%), WisdomTree Quantum Computing Fund (+2.9%), iShares A.I. Innovation and Tech Active ETF (+2.7%), and Solar Energy ETF (+2.7%), with uranium, space, and AI-themed funds also posting gains above 2%. Among regional ETFs, iShares MSCI South Korea ETF jumps 3.9%, consistent with the semiconductor and AI supply chain bid. iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ex China ETF and iShares MSCI Australia ETF each gain roughly 2%. In commodities, silver leads with the Silver ETF and Global X Silver Miners ETF both up 3.9%; copper miners and gold miners are also sharply higher. Gold ETF gains 2.1% as spot gold extends its rally.
Among individual movers not covered above, networking and semiconductor connectivity names are the clear common thread on the upside, while the losers are more mixed. CoreWeave turns negative after proposing a $3 billion convertible senior notes offering.
