Burry Sells Some of his Chip Puts but Stays Bearish

Michael Burry sold 25% of his put options on the VanEck Semiconductor ETF today, but said the position left over is still "very large." He did not say how many contracts he holds or what they are worth.

Picture: Burry Sells Some of his Chip Puts but Stays Bearish

In October, Burry moved nearly all of his short exposure into two trades, according to a analyst's summary of his Substack post: puts on the Nasdaq-100 expiring in April 2027, and SMH puts expiring in June 2027. Both sit about 20% out of the money. SMH was up more than 67% for the year at the time of that report.

He probably still holds puts on Palantir, Oracle, Caterpillar and QQQ. On the same day he said he added 50% to his MercadoLibre stake, which he bought under $1,500.

The news first spread through a Burry-tracking account on X and was picked up by Crypto Briefing. There is no confirmation by Burry.

Nobody outside Burry knows how big the position is. He shut down Scion Asset Management and deregistered it after his last 13F filing in November 2025, so there are no quarterly disclosures to check. The only size clue is from August, when he said his QQQ puts made up about 6% of his portfolio.

Hypothetical Timeline

  • January 2026: He disclosed Oracle puts.
  • April 2026: He revealed SOXX puts (January 2027, $330 strike) and QQQ puts.
  • July 2026: He disclosed a short on Micron.
  • August 2026: He closed the losing SOXX puts, added to QQQ puts, and took profits on Tesla and Applied Materials shorts.
  • September 2026: He said he was pulling back on risk. He sold his December 2026 Nvidia and Palantir puts instead of rolling them, to avoid time decay, and said he was holding cash.
  • October 2026: He consolidated into SMH and Nasdaq-100 puts and said he sees a market peak within about nine months.

Sectors he is betting against

  • Semiconductors: Nvidia, Micron and the chip ETFs
  • Large-cap tech, through the Nasdaq-100 and QQQ
  • AI software and data: Palantir
  • AI cloud and infrastructure: Oracle and Nebius
  • Industrials: Caterpillar

On the other side, his largest longs are Lululemon, Molina Healthcare and MercadoLibre.

The sale does not look like a change of mind. Burry has trimmed before. In August he dropped a losing chip bet and rebuilt it in a different form. In September he cut risk across the book. Each time, the core view stayed the same: AI-driven valuations are stretched and a larger fall is coming.

His record on this call is mixed so far. Oracle puts have paid off, with the stock down about 40% since he disclosed them. Palantir is down about 14% since his puts became public. His Nvidia puts were still underwater earlier this year, and the chip rally he is fighting has been steep. Options also expire, so being early costs him money even if he turns out to be right.
