Map: The Gulf and Hormuz, marking Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Fars news agency reports that Iran has stopped illicit vessel traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The claim directly contradicts a statement from Trump on October 22. He said flows through the strait exceed pre-conflict levels and that Iran is fabricating strikes. The two governments now give opposing accounts of what is moving through the strait.
A figure from October 19, which is background to this move and not a measure of today, put transit toward two vessels a day, against a pre-conflict average of 125.
The gap follows roughly seven weeks of tanker fires, mine strikes and a sinking. Tehran wants the blockade lifted first. Any Iranian statement framed as enforcement rather than closure leaves the standoff over the blockade unresolved rather than easing it. The existing risk premium on crude oil has grounds to stay intact until flow data, not competing claims, shows which account is accurate.
