Union Pacific reported third-quarter earnings of $3.53 a share, $0.02 above expectations. Revenue came in at $7.20 billion, in line with forecasts.
The company affirmed its 2026 outlook, calling for reported earnings growth in the high single digits and holding to its three-year target of high single to low double digit annual growth through 2027. It also reaffirmed plans for pricing gains above inflation, an industry-leading operating ratio and return on invested capital, and steady cash generation with continued annual dividend increases. Union Pacific updated its 2026 capital plan to $3.5 billion and said it expects the core business to improve its operating ratio, though high fuel prices will weigh on the reported figure.
Chief Executive Jim Vena said the railroad delivered 6% volume growth while maintaining strong service, and said the company looks forward to the Surface Transportation Board's review of its merger with Norfolk Southern.
The results give regulators little new financial reason to slow that review, since Union Pacific is hitting its own targets without counting on merger synergies to support its outlook. The volume growth and steady operating ratio goals also back up the operational case Vena has made publicly for the deal. By flagging fuel costs as a drag on the reported operating ratio even as core performance improves, management appears to be managing expectations on a metric investors watch closely for rail efficiency. None of this resolves the timing of the regulatory review itself, which remains the main uncertainty for the merger.
