Comcast reported third-quarter earnings per share of $1.07, $0.06 above expectations. Revenue was $29.30bn, short of the $30.16bn forecast.
Co-CEOs Brian L. Roberts and Mike Cavanagh said the results reflect investment in the company's go-to-market strategy. They pointed to Peacock's second straight profitable quarter and to Universal's box office haul, which has passed $5bn globally this year.
Comcast's share buyback program remains suspended, a pause the company has said will continue through the planned split of its businesses into two separate public companies. That leaves the revenue shortfall without the usual buffer a buyback can provide, at a time when the company has fewer tools to support its results while the separation plays out.
Peacock's profitability and Universal's box office milestone are points of strength, but they do not change the broader picture of a company in transition with capital returns on hold. Universal's $5bn box office figure also places its content lineup alongside the large-screen format discussions other studios have been engaged in, a sign that much of Comcast's near-term story is running through its media and theme park units rather than its core cable business.
