Map: The Gulf and Hormuz, marking Riyadh, Shaybah
Monday's rally, which had shrugged off Middle East escalation only to lose footing after hours as oil and yields rose together, now gives way to a sharper and more concrete deterioration in the Gulf security picture. The Houthi-Saudi conflict has widened overnight beyond military and energy sites to civilian airports and Aramco's Dhahran headquarters, forcing a halt at Riyadh's King Khalid International, while a drone attack on Aramco's Shaybah oilfield killed two people even as the Saudi Energy Ministry said operations continued. The State Department has ordered non-emergency staff and families out of Saudi Arabia and issued a wider Gulf alert, and Iran's Revolutionary Guard says it is preparing to unveil a new weapon, with separate reporting that Washington has drawn up plans to strike Iranian energy infrastructure if combat resumes. The VIX is up 11.1% pre-market, the clearest sign yet that the market is pricing this as a genuine escalation rather than a contained standoff. The Brent Oil ETF is up 2.2%, a smaller move than the volatility spike would suggest, consistent with crude's recent habit of swinging both ways on the headlines rather than trending.
Earnings remain the other story. CSX is up 2.6% after a Q3 beat, and Ionis Pharmaceuticals gains 3.8% after partner GSK won FDA approval for Hibsago in chronic hepatitis B, a deal that pays Ionis milestones and royalties. Zimmer Biomet adds 2.8%. On the losing side, Hexcel drops 10.1% and Rollins falls 7.4% after a disappointing quarter that its CEO said the company is addressing "with urgency." Lam Research is down 8.1% even after beating on revenue, as chip-equipment names give back some of Tuesday's gains. Credo Technology slides 5.9%, reversing part of its recent run, and Strategy Inc is off 6.0%.
With the Hormuz standoff now compounded by a widening Saudi-Houthi front and US diplomatic staff being pulled from the region, volatility looks set to stay elevated regardless of how individual earnings land.
