Map: The Gulf and Hormuz, marking Strait of Hormuz
The tension between easing oil prices and an unresolved Strait of Hormuz standoff is carrying into the premarket session. WTI settled at $101.79 and Brent at $108.79 on Tuesday, both pulling back even as Iran's navy reported a tanker fire in the strait and Tehran's foreign minister said Iran will not negotiate after the US sought to add clauses to a reopening deal. A UK Maritime Trade Operations center also flagged a separate incident near Bukha, Oman, though it reported all crew safe.
Equity moves are now splitting along company-specific lines rather than macro fear. Super Micro Computer jumps 12.8% after guiding preliminary first-quarter sales to $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, well above the roughly $15 billion expected. Dell Technologies rises 4.7% and Credo Technology Group adds 6.4% in sympathy with the data-center buildout theme, while EchoStar gains 5.4% and Space Exploration Technologies rises 9.4% after posting Q3 revenue and profit above estimates. On the other side, Intuitive Surgical falls 7.8% despite beating earnings estimates, Netflix drops 6.3% after guiding fourth-quarter revenue to $13.44 billion versus $13.51 billion expected, and the State Street SPDR bank ETF slides 5.9%. Fortinet is off 2.9% and the natural gas ETF slips 2.5%.
Overseas data complicates the inflation picture. UK CPI rose 3.5% year over year in September, above the 3.4% expected and up from 3.1%, with core CPI at 2.8% and producer input prices jumping to 8.3% from 6.1%. That comes alongside Bank of England's Greene warning Tuesday that policy may not be restrictive enough and that more wage disinflation is needed.
On Ukraine, envoy Witkoff is set to meet Putin on Wednesday with Kushner joining virtually, following comments from Finland's president that technical progress toward a peace framework has been made ahead of a planned St. Petersburg session. Germany says US contacts suggest Washington is interested in a negotiation process.
Trump posted overnight that he will mandate large data centers generate their own electricity and return excess power to the grid or pay communities a dividend, a move he said could lower rather than raise electricity prices. Nvidia separately introduced DSX Pod AI factories aimed at speeding European data-center deployment to as little as 14 days.
