The figure is well above the estimates that had circulated ahead of the report. A preview from FN2.AI and ScanX Trade had put consensus at $7.36 a share, later revised to $7.13, down from $8.14 a year earlier. A separate preview from ad-hoc-news.de, published eight days before the release, had estimated $6.77 a share, a 16.8% decline from the year-ago quarter.
Travelers said its board declared a regular quarterly dividend of $1.25 a share, payable December 31, 2026 to shareholders of record as of December 10, 2026. In the first quarter of 2026, the company had raised its regular dividend by 14%, according to its investor relations release at the time, when it reported diluted earnings of $7.78 a share. In the second quarter, Travelers reported a combined ratio of 83.6%, improved by 6.7 points from 90.3% a year earlier, with catastrophe losses contributing 4.9 points to that ratio versus 8.5 points a year earlier, according to its investor relations release.
This quarter's beat extends a pattern already visible in Travelers' recent results, in which underwriting discipline and lighter catastrophe losses have pushed core income well above what analysts had modeled. A nearly two-dollar-per-share beat on revenue that came in essentially in line points to margin strength rather than top-line growth, consistent with a combined ratio that has been improving as reserve charges and storm costs ease. The dividend decision signals that the board sees that underwriting trend as durable rather than a one-quarter result. With premium growth modest but profitability outperforming, the broader signal for property and casualty insurers is that pricing discipline is still driving earnings upside even as revenue growth slows. Travelers shares closed at $360.61 on Wednesday, October 14, down 0.1% that day, according to ScanX Trade, ahead of Friday's report.
