Avis Budget receives $650 million settlement from Pentwater Capital
The cash payment resolves a short-swing profit claim and will help pay down 2027 debt before year end

Avis Budget Group has received a $650 million cash settlement from Pentwater Capital Management, resolving a lawsuit that sought recovery of short-swing profits under Section 16(b) of the Securities Exchange Act.
The payment will be recognised in Avis Budget's fourth-quarter financial statements. The company expects to use part of the proceeds to repay the remaining $350 million of principal on its 5.750% Senior Notes due 2027 before the end of the year.
The settlement is a legal recovery tied to Pentwater's trading activity, not a commercial dispute, and has no bearing on rental volumes, pricing or fleet costs, the factors that have driven Avis Budget's recent results. Putting most of the cash toward the 2027 notes cuts gross leverage and clears a refinancing question years ahead of the notes' maturity.
Because the money lands in the fourth quarter, it gives the balance sheet a one-time lift that sits apart from operating cash flow. That makes near-term debt metrics look stronger without signalling any shift in the underlying rental business, and it has no read-through to competitors or to demand across the industry.
