Xi Jinping said China and the United States had reached a common understanding on many issues, capping a visit that produced a two-month extension of the trade truce between the two countries. Xi described the competition between the two economies as healthy rather than adversarial.
The visit ended without a breakthrough on Taiwan or on tariffs. Xi told Donald Trump that China's position on sovereignty and territorial integrity is clear, and repeated China's request that the United States oppose Taiwan independence and handle the issue with prudence.
Talks during the visit covered artificial intelligence, trade, Taiwan, chip exports and Iran. Both sides largely restated known positions rather than signalling new concessions.
The visit followed a period in which money markets have been pricing multiple rate hikes and investors have stayed wary of geopolitical risk. A calmer tone between the two largest economies lowers the near-term risk of a sharp escalation and tends to support riskier assets, though the disputes over Taiwan and semiconductor exports remain unresolved.
