Xi Jinping held small-group exchanges with Donald Trump, according to Xinhua. The two leaders are set to meet again Thursday evening at a state dinner in Washington.
Trade and technology are on the agenda for the talks. Trump has said he and Xi made tremendous strides on trade, with security, technology and artificial intelligence also to be discussed. Xi told Trump that China and the United States must avoid conflict and seek peaceful coexistence, and said competition between the two countries should not be about winning or losing.
Earlier this week, Trump extended the trade truce with China and welcomed Xi to Washington.
The small-group exchanges follow days of public statements from both sides emphasizing cooperation on trade, AI, military dialogue and cultural exchange. The tone matches what has been on display since Xi's arrival, though neither leader has announced a new commitment or policy shift.
