Chinese leader Xi Jinping is unlikely to bring a business delegation to his meeting with President Trump, according to sources.
The two leaders are due to meet in Washington on September 24 to discuss trade, rare earths and artificial intelligence. US and Chinese officials held a second day of trade talks in New York this week, focused on AI and investment, working to prepare the implementation of deals reached ahead of the summit. Trade negotiator Greer has said a three- to six-month extension of the current trade truce is possible.
China is also investigating DeepSeek and Moonshot over alleged leaks of data to Anthropic, an inquiry opened just days before the summit. Investors are separately watching Taiwan's August export orders and unemployment figures ahead of the meeting.
A Chinese delegation of business leaders has accompanied Xi to past meetings with US counterparts. Its apparent absence this time signals that Beijing is not preparing for a major commercial accord at the summit, despite the ongoing trade talks and optimism around tariff discussions.
