Trump said Iran "is not doing well," adding to his earlier comment that he has meetings on the subject today. He did not elaborate on what he meant.
President Trump said he has meetings on Iran today, as officials from both countries converge on New York for talks at the United Nations this week.
Qatar says it is working to facilitate an agreement between Washington and Tehran and has pointed to the possibility of a short-term deal. Iran's top security official, Rezaei, said Saturday that Tehran had sent conditions to end the conflict to the US through Qatar and was waiting on Trump's response. Iran separately confirmed that Qatar had relayed its conditions to Washington.
Vice President Vance said oil is still flowing from Iran and that the US will work to protect Navy vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. He said the Iran talks will continue at the UN this week. Trade representative Greer said nothing is off the table on Iran sanctions. Separately, Axios reported that Trump considered military action against Yemen's Houthis over the weekend before pulling back, amid rising tension in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. In Congress, Senator Grassley is pressing Trump for a diesel export embargo as pump prices rise, comparing it to the soybean and wheat embargoes of the 1970s.
Trump's meetings signal active engagement on Iran at a moment when both his foreign minister and Iran's are arriving in New York, with Qatar mediating and Iran's top security official already having laid out terms for ending the regional conflict.
