The S&P 500 ETF slips -0.4% in a session with a clear split between semiconductors and most everything else. Financials are roughly flat at -0.1%, though the sector masks a wide range: crypto-linked names Coinbase (+11.8%) and Robinhood (+9.7%) surge at the top while most traditional banks and insurers lose between -0.5% and -1.5%, with Navient the worst in the sector at -3.4%. Technology is flat at +0.1% overall but is deeply bifurcated: semiconductor equipment names lead sharply higher while software and IT services weigh on the back end, with Qualcomm the worst at -5.6% and Accenture at -4.1%. Consumer Discretionary loses -0.4%, with homebuilders and leisure names broadly soft; General Motors (-5.1%) and Ford Motor (-3.8%) are the weakest members, and Lennar (-4.3%) stands out among homebuilders. Health Care dips -0.3%, broadly mixed with Intuitive Surgical (+2.2%) the standout gainer. Industrials are nearly flat at -0.1%, with power infrastructure names Vertiv and Eaton each gaining +2.7% while defense and transport names fall. Real Estate drops -0.6%, broadly lower. Consumer Staples lose -0.5%, with PepsiCo (-2.5%) and Mondelez (-1.9%) among the weaker names. Materials fall -1.3%, weighed by Nucor (-6.5%), Albemarle (-3.1%), and CF Industries (-3.6%). Utilities decline -1.1%, broadly sold across the board with Constellation Energy (-2.4%) the weakest. Energy slips -0.2%, with Baker Hughes (+0.9%) the lone notable gainer after the US oil rig count rose 2 to 452.
Among factors, S&P 500 Momentum ETF (+1.0%) and High Beta ETF (+0.7%) are the only meaningful gainers, reflecting the semiconductor-driven pocket of strength. Growth is barely positive and value is down -0.5%, while dividend and small-cap factors are modestly lower. International factor ETFs lag, with iShares MSCI EAFE Value ETF off -1.5%.
Within the mega-cap growth cohort, semiconductor equipment names dominate the top: Lam Research (+5.0%), Applied Materials (+4.4%), and KLA Corp (+2.9%) lead. Alphabet shares gain +0.7% and Amazon +0.7%. On the downside, Qualcomm (-5.6%), Accenture (-4.1%), Intuit (-3.9%), and Oracle (-2.8%) are the notable laggards. Meta Platforms loses -1.6% and Salesforce -1.9%.
Semiconductor ETFs hold up well: iShares Semiconductor ETF gains +1.0% and VanEck Semiconductor ETF +0.7%, consistent with the equipment-driven strength. Homebuilder ETFs XHB and ITB each fall around -1.0% to -1.3%, in line with weakness in the discretionary sector. Software ETFs are broadly off, with iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF down -1.4% and Software ETF -1.2%. Biotech ETFs lose -1.1% to -1.2%. The Metals & Mining ETF drops -2.2%. The iShares MSCI Europe Financials ETF falls -1.7%.
The single-stock movers show two contrasting themes: crypto-adjacent and storage-related names surge while space and steel names are hit hard. Strategy Inc leads the gainers at +14.0%, and Sandisk adds +8.0%. On the losing side, space-sector names cluster at the bottom, and Netflix drops sharply.
