Uber has agreed to acquire ezCater, a platform that lets businesses order catering and workplace meals from more than 140,000 restaurants across the United States, for $2.3 billion in cash, according to a press release from Uber Technologies. The company did not give an expected closing date.
ezCater generated more than $2.5 billion in gross bookings over the past twelve months, growing by high teens percentages year over year, and is profitable on a non-GAAP operating basis, Uber said. Average order values on the platform run above $400. Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said catering is a large business that can become a significant revenue stream for restaurants, and that Uber can bring ezCater's platform to millions more customers.
The price makes ezCater Uber's largest acquisition since it built out its delivery business through earlier deals. Those include an agreement in July to acquire Delivery Hero for €41.50 a share, an equity value of $14.8 billion, which is expected to close in the second half of 2027. Uber also completed the purchase of Getir's food delivery business and a stake in its grocery unit for about $465 million in July, and bought parking app SpotHero for about $600 million in April.
The acquisition pushes Uber beyond the one-off consumer orders that have anchored Uber Eats and into recurring business-to-business spending on office and event catering. Folding ezCater's network of caterers and restaurants into Uber's existing driver and logistics operations could cut delivery costs on both sides and give Uber a way into corporate expense accounts that consumer delivery apps have struggled to reach. The size of the deal also shows Uber is still willing to spend on buying market share in adjacent food logistics, even as its core rides and delivery businesses mature.
