Map: The Gulf and Hormuz, marking Strait of Hormuz
S&P 500 futures are down roughly 0.1% to 0.2% as last week's assumption that the Strait of Hormuz crisis had been contained looks increasingly shaky. The VIX is up sharply in pre-market trading, a sign that markets are re-pricing the risk rather than treating it as resolved.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations has logged seven vessel strikes around Hormuz since September 28, and Iran's Revolutionary Guard is warning tankers off the US-backed transit route entirely, with a fresh incident reported near Khasab, Oman and another off Al Mukha, Yemen. Saudi Aramco's CEO says global oil supply is "dangerously low" and argues that without the East-West Pipeline, Brent would already be near $200 a barrel. Inside Iran, the oil minister has resigned, replaced on an acting basis by Hamid Bovard, several refiners have been halted from trading through October 14 over disclosure issues, and Tehran is reportedly weighing withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Global LNG spot prices have hit their highest level since late 2022 as Qatar's supply freeze persists and Hormuz transit volumes sit roughly 80% below February levels, raising the prospect of a bidding war between Europe and Asia for US cargoes. In Yemen, Saudi-backed forces report gains against Houthi positions near Bab El-Mandeb. Separately, Brazil's real has strengthened more than 4% against the dollar after Jair Bolsonaro outperformed expectations in early presidential vote counts, lifting the Brazil and Latin America ETFs sharply.
Sector moves are modest outside energy. The Energy sector ETF is the laggard, down 0.4%, while Utilities lead at +0.4%. Technology is roughly flat but Intel is down over 4%. Financials and Real Estate are both higher.
