SoftBank Group has executed the third and final tranche of its follow-on investment in OpenAI Group PBC, putting in $10.0bln. The deal brings SoftBank's cumulative investment in OpenAI to $64.60bln, for a stake of about 13%.
The tranche completes a $30bln funding commitment that SoftBank and Nvidia each pledged to OpenAI's latest round. Nvidia closed a matching $10bln final tranche of its own pledge, bringing the round's combined final investment to $20bln.
The close comes on the same day California's attorney general issued a formal subpoena to OpenAI over its handling of cybersecurity incidents, a compulsory step beyond the voluntary disclosures the company had made earlier. OpenAI has said its annualized revenue run rate is approaching $70bln, up more than 70% this quarter, and a source has said its third-quarter consumer revenue has already topped all of 2025.
SoftBank's decision to follow through on the full pledge, rather than scale it back, shows the company sticking to its commitment even as OpenAI faces a widening set of safety and security questions. The $64.6bln stake quantifies SoftBank's exposure to a company touting almost $70bln in annualized revenue while under a formal state investigation, with OpenAI's governance questions still unresolved ahead of any eventual public listing.
