Nvidia and SoftBank have each put $10 billion into OpenAI's latest funding round, completing pledges of $30 billion apiece that had been outstanding.
The payments close out a financing arrangement that ties OpenAI closely to two of its largest backers. Nvidia supplies the chips that OpenAI runs its models on, and the $10 billion outlay sits alongside the $279 billion buyback authorization and the Anthropic exposure it has already disclosed, another sign the company is channelling cash back into the same customer base it sells to.
For SoftBank, meeting the $10 billion commitment in full comes just after a jumbo bond sale and an expanded credit line taken out to fund its AI-related debts, a reminder of how stretched its balance sheet has become even as it completes the payment.
The deal underlines how intertwined OpenAI's financing has become with its own suppliers and investors, a structure that leaves both Nvidia and SoftBank with deepening stakes in OpenAI's commercial success.
