The market's dominant story remains the earnings-driven split between software strength and Corteva's collapse, and that split has only sharpened into the afternoon as the Corteva situation turns legal. Fifteen states have filed a fraud lawsuit against Corteva over its Vylor spinoff, alleging the separation was designed to strip out tens of billions in PFAS liabilities inherited from DuPont. Corteva shares are down 84.4% on the session, compounding the stock dividend distribution that triggered the initial plunge.
On the other side of the ledger, Accenture's blowout quarter continues to lift the broader technology and services complex, with shares up 18.2%. Synopsys (+13.5%), Fair Isaac (+12.7%), Coherent (+11.1%) and EPAM Systems (+8.7%) are all sharply higher, underscoring how concentrated the day's gains are in software and tech-adjacent names even as Materials sags under Corteva's weight. On the downside, Paramount Skydance is off 7.4%, Repligen is down 6.5%, FMC has fallen 4.6% and TKO Group is down 4.4%.
The macro backdrop is shifting. Fed Governor Jefferson signaled the central bank may need more time before its next move, reiterating commitment to the 2% inflation target but stressing data dependence, while Kashkari said he sees no signs of systemic risk. Two-year Treasury yields briefly hit their lowest level since September 22, down nearly 13 basis points, as markets recalibrate rate expectations. The euro extended losses, down 1% against the dollar.
Geopolitics is adding a fresh layer of risk. The Wall Street Journal reports the US is sending up to 10,000 more troops to the Middle East along with a third aircraft carrier, and that Trump has told aides he expects to resume bombing Iran by the end of November. Trump separately said he is looking into whether a pilot had ties to Iran. Putin, meanwhile, says Russia is ready to resume arms control dialogue with the US and talks with Europe without preconditions, while accusing Germany and other European states of seizing Russian assets.
Elsewhere, California's attorney general has subpoenaed OpenAI over cybersecurity incidents, and Anthropic is reportedly targeting a mega-IPO before Thanksgiving, with marketing potentially starting the week of November 9.
