US Building Permits Come In At 1.394 Million Rate In August
Single-family authorizations fall 1.8% from July, the Census Bureau's report shows

Single-family authorizations, a narrower measure that strips out apartments, came in at 878,000, down 1.8% from a revised July figure of 894,000, the Census Bureau's report shows. Even with the monthly drop, permits remain 3.5% above the August 2025 rate of 1.347 million, according to the same report.
The Census Bureau itself cautions that permit data can move around from month to month and that it can take three months of readings to see an underlying trend.
With no comparable prior print or trend data available for August, the move reads as a modest adjustment to the data rather than a shift in direction. The scale involved keeps the permits trend roughly where markets had already priced it, leaving the broader outlook for housing and interest rates unchanged for now.
