Map: The Gulf and Hormuz, marking Strait of Hormuz, Abqaiq
S&P 500 futures point to a roughly flat open, up 0.1%, as traders weigh Iran's denial of reports that it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz against a broader thaw in Gulf oil flows.
Iranian sources cited by Fars called Kyodo and Reuters reports of a Hormuz reopening deal invalid, even after a senior Iranian official had suggested Tehran would open the strait within seven days if the US lifted its port blockade. Secretary of State Rubio said 60% to 70% of Iran's oil flows are already moving and climbing, and that Washington remains open to diplomacy despite sanctions crippling Iran's economy. Saudi Arabia is pressing ahead regardless, restarting its East-West pipeline and preparing to resume Yanbu exports this week, while Bank of America raised its Brent forecast to $95 from $83 on persistent Middle East tensions. Crude has nonetheless extended its slide to the lowest level since September 8 on hopes of more Gulf supply, even as US diesel hit a fresh record of $6.527 a gallon. On the Fed, Musalem, Goolsbee and Collins all struck a hawkish tone overnight, warning that elevated energy prices and tariffs could keep inflation above target and may require further rate hikes. Markets are also positioning for Thursday's Trump-Xi summit, with USTR Greer reiterating that a three-to-six-month trade truce extension is possible and the EU's Sefcovic calling separate talks with China credible on market access and rare earths.
Energy is the weakest sector premarket, with the XLE down 1.2% and the crude oil ETF off 2.3%. Financials and technology are little changed. Diagnostics names are under pressure, with Labcorp down 6.1% and Quest Diagnostics down 6.0%, while Axalta Coating is up 3.9% within materials.
