Traders are looking ahead to a meeting between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington on September 24, where tariffs, trade and critical minerals are expected to top the agenda. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun has said the two leaders will hold in-depth talks during the visit. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has already met China's Vice Premier He Lifeng to prepare the ground for the summit.
Energy prices remain a source of concern for investors watching inflation. On Monday, Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure kept oil markets on edge, as Trump weighs how far to back Saudi Arabia in response. Trump also called on Monday for the war in Ukraine to end, citing global suffering and monthly casualties of around 25,000 people, mostly soldiers, and said Russia has lost control of its diesel oil industry.
Falling yields and stronger Bitcoin prices point to some easing in inflation concerns, but the Trump-Xi summit is seen as the pivotal factor for markets still anxious about tariffs and energy costs. A successful negotiation could ease both pressures, while an escalation would add to them. Until the summit takes place, the outlook for markets remains neutral despite Monday's gains.
