Mystery Seller Dumbs Data Center Debt

The sale includes a slice tied to the Stargate site in New Mexico, where Oracle has cited force majeure, and bids are due Nov. 19.

Bloomberg says a mystery seller is trying to dump about $500 million of data center loans, offering a dozen of them in a single rare auction. The seller is anonymous and is using a bids-wanted-in-competition process, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the information is private. Bids are due Nov. 19 and must be at least $10 million. Bloomberg says it is among the first auctions of its kind to hold only data center debt.

The package includes debt tied to operators such as Vantage Data Centers and CyrusOne. One piece is a $25 million slice backing a large site in New Mexico that is part of the Stargate project shared by OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle. That is the same location where Oracle sent the developer a notice citing force majeure, a clause that can shield a party from obligations when events outside its control get in the way.

The sale comes days after a Democratic sweep of the US midterm elections, which raised doubts about many of these projects. In Texas, where many developers operate, the Democratic governor-elect has called for an immediate moratorium on data center construction.
