Midday Mashup

What started the morning as a tense but orderly standoff between Hormuz escalation and midterm-driven optimism has turned into a full risk-off break. The VIX has spiked 60% as a semiconductor earnings shock collided with an unresolved Iran crisis, and dealers have flipped short gamma, meaning every leg lower now gets mechanically amplified as option hedgers sell into weakness.

Qualcomm's cautious guidance gutted the chip complex, and the damage has spread far beyond one name. Sandisk is down 19.4%, Western Digital off 15.8%, Astera Labs down 16.3% and Nebius down 16.7%, while Redwire Space has dropped 19.7%. On the other side, AppLovin is up 29.6% on its buyback raise and earnings beat, EPAM Systems has jumped 20.3%, and CF Industries and Corpay are both higher by roughly 8%, underscoring how dispersed the tape has become rather than uniformly negative.

The Hormuz standoff remains unresolved. Iran's security chief Rezaei told Russia's Putin that ending the war is the priority, but Tehran has made clear it will not reopen the strait until its seven conditions are met and will not negotiate that point. Yemeni strikes reportedly hit Dammam's King Fahd airport, and Qatar condemned a separate attempted strike toward Medina, keeping regional risk elevated even as US-Iran contacts continue, including reported talks on deporting Iranians amid the conflict.

Fed officials leaned hawkish on the margin. Richmond's Barkin said cost pressures tied to tariffs are broad-based and being passed through, while Cleveland's Hammack said she prefers frequent, smaller rate moves and floated six of eight meetings as a modest cadence. ECB's Lagarde said the energy shock and AI investment are pulling policy in opposite directions, complicating the read on inflation.

Elsewhere, Apple's seven-part dollar bond sale drew $31bn of demand as it seeks up to $7bn, a reminder that credit markets are functioning even as equities wobble. Google announced a $17bn Wyoming data center build with Tallgrass Energy and AEP, and the FTC unveiled new detail in its Amazon advertising case alleging surcharges lifted revenue by $87m in one holiday season.

The broader signal is that this is no longer a single-sector story. With dealers short gamma below the 7,661 flip level, further weakness in mega-cap tech risks a disorderly slide rather than an orderly pullback.
