FTC and 22 states say Amazon added up to 250% to ad prices on big shopping days
The newly public parts of the updated complaint allege the surcharges raised Amazon's worldwide revenue by $87m over the 2022 holiday shopping season.
The Federal Trade Commission and 22 states have filed an updated complaint against Amazon in the Western District of Washington. Details that were previously redacted are now public.
They allege Amazon secretly raised advertising prices by as much as 50% above auction results on ordinary days. On major shopping days such as Prime Day or Black Friday, they say, the markup was as much as 250%.
The complaint also puts a figure on the gain. It alleges the surcharges raised Amazon's revenue by $87m worldwide during the 2022 holiday shopping season.
That moves the case from sealed claims to documented specifics. It is direct litigation over pricing practices, and no settlement has been disclosed, so Amazon's legal exposure remains open.
