German factory orders rebound 4.4% in September after August's slump

The rise, a shade under the forecast, is smaller than the August fall and leaves the mixed run of German industrial data unresolved.

German factory orders rose 4.4% in September from August, almost exactly what forecasters expected at 4.5%. The rebound is smaller than the fall that came before it.

Orders dropped 10.6% in August against a 1.0% decline expected, reversing a 2.5% gain in July. A bounce from a base that low says little about the trend. The same data run has swung sharply the other way: industrial production rose 2% in August, against 0.5% expected, after falling 1.1% in July. One month of recovery in orders does not make a turn, and German hard data has still shown no clear direction this autumn.

The Economy Ministry's own view is cautious. On October 14 it said the economy's momentum had likely slowed temporarily in the third quarter and that the outlook for industrial activity remains subdued. That came less than a week after it raised its 2026 growth forecast to 1.3% from 0.5% on October 8.
